Alssund pavillon
On the bank of Alssund, in front of Alsion, stands Olafur Eliasson's more-than-seven-metre steel Pavillion from 2009. It mirrors its surroundings and changes as you pass; from the water it works as a beacon or navigation instrument.

Alssundbroen
Alssundbroen takes the A8 across the sound about 2 km northwest of Sønderborg, relieving the 1930 bascule bridge King Christian X's Bro in town. Queen Ingrid opened it on 19 October 1981; state-owned, it is run by the Road Directorate.

Barsten
On the slope of Dybbøl Bjærg lies Barsten, a granite block legend says a giant hurled from Als at the folk of Sundeved. Once so large a cart could turn on it, it has been blasted since 1778 for foundation and support stones.

Der Butt im Griff
On Havnegade stands the bronze sculpture 'Der Butt im Griff' by German writer Günther Grass, unveiled by the crown prince couple in 2004. The mayor of the day bought it ahead of Middelfart – and only then found the money.

Deutsches Museum Nordschleswig presents the Danish-German border region's history and the German minority's identity and culture. Created by the minority, it reopened in May 1992 in the German library building on Rønhaveplads.

Dybbøl Mølle
Dybbøl Mølle was the centre of the fighting in the Schleswig Wars of 1848-51 and 1864, twice destroyed in battle and rebuilt; in 1864 the Danish army ran an observation post here. Milling ended in 1990, and today the landmark is a museum.

Hans Norsk
In March 1848 Hans Norsk defied the town council and hoisted the Danish flag over Sønderborg at Skyttestenen by the shore. A memorial stone in the castle park still marks where he raised the Dannebrog during the 1848 uprising.

Historisk Ringridning
Sønderborg's ring riding began in 1877; since 1888 riders have processed through the town to the festplads. The grounds by Kongevej opened in 1909 with a hall for 660 guests, and the town still flags for the ringridning in July.

MOEBIUS
A Möbius Strip sculpture on a roundabout, Skibsted made for his hometown. Jens Martin Skibsted is a designer and enterpreneur, grandson of Danfoss founder Mads Clausen. Published poems and worked as a creative director.

Multikulturhuset
Multikulturhuset on Byens Havn houses Biblioteket Sønderborg, Det Tyske Bibliotek and Sønderjyllands Kunstskole alongside cultural events and exhibitions. The house rose on Nørre Havnegade, and the Kunstskole moved in when it opened.

Myten
The sculpture Myten on Havnegade depicts King Christian II, who was imprisoned at Sønderborg Castle for 12 years in the 1500s. The tale of the groove in the table edge grew from an 1871 painting – in reality it never existed.

Mølleparken is Sønderborg's summer stage: each summer the park fills with open-air concerts as Kultur i Syd presents Danish and international names. Rock i Mølleparken drew a big audience here in 2024.

Sønderborg's post office, built 1913–16 in the Biedermeier style, was named the town's most beautiful house by the Sonderburger Zeitung. Its sandstone eagle came down in 1946 – today the old posthus is a café.

Sønderborg Bibliotek
Founded by Danish teachers who arrived after the 1920 Reunification, the library opened in March 1921 in three rooms at Sønderborghus. In 1971 it moved to Kongevej, lending 2,750 books on the first day.

Nørre Havnegade once ended at a gate by the rowing clubs; unable to pass, people named the spot 'Verdens Ende', later officially approved. Boat clubs live here today, and Sønderborg Roklub invites newcomers to a free taste of e-rowing.
