Sønderborg Slot

Recommended by students

The castle and its museum — the town's whole story in one building.

Its story

This 1100s castle now houses Museum Sønderjylland and the story of the dukes, the wars, the Reunification and the borderland. It also hosts concerts – the chapel has Denmark's largest renaissance organ, and the park meets the water.

Queen Dorothea: Piety and Power 8 Oct

Sønderborg Slot · 90 kr.

In Danish

Lecture about Queen Dorothea, her life, and her influence on Sønderborg. Open to everyone, 8 October 2026 at 19:30 in Sønderborg Slot. Tickets must be purchased in advance. Some sides of the story: Religion played a major role in Queen Dorothea’s life, and it shaped not only her but also her behaviour towards the court, her family and her subjects. She was a strict and dominant mother who kept her children at home until they were grown up. When the eldest sons finally left home, they in turn began a long youth rebellion that lasted until the queen’s death. Her eldest son did not come to his mother’s deathbed, and he only married after her death, even though she had asked him to do so for years. As a widow she controlled large areas which she governed – including the region around Sønderborg. They were ruled according to the same principles as the family, with a mix of strictness and care. Get closer to Queen Dorothea on 8 October at the castle where she took her last breath.
