About the lecturer
Isabel Bramsen is an associate professor and head of Peace and Conflict Studies at Lund University. She researches diplomacy, dialogue, and nonviolent resistance.
Background
In a time marked by historic rearmament and war in both Ukraine and the Middle East, it can be hard to believe in peace as anything but a naive utopia. EU countries are buying weapons for 6,000 billion kroner, and opinion polls show broad support for the militarization of Europe. We are preparing for a world at war, but what if we instead worked from the logic of peace? Based on her book The Logic of Peace, Isabel Bramsen challenges the idea that war is the realistic option and peace the unrealistic one. She shows how peace processes in practice often begin on a small scale: in rapprochements, relationships, and the courage to meet, even when the conflict is entrenched.
