About the author

Freja Polonius is the author of the book *Min ven vil dø*, in which she follows Preben’s struggle to die while trying to understand why he could see no alternatives. Later, she co-authored and edited the anthology *Døden på recept* from 2025, which examines the possible consequences of legalisation. The experience as a relative led her to move from curiosity to opposition to assisted suicide. Today, she contributes to the debate with a strong combination of personal experience and professional insight.

Background

For a year, Freja Polonius followed her friend Preben, who wanted to end his life. He had been in a tragic accident and was paralysed from the neck down. He needed help with everything and missed his life before the accident. He was completely certain in his decision. In 2022, Preben took part in the DR programme *On Tuesday I Will Die* with Anders Lund Madsen. The programme followed Preben during the last month leading up to his planned death by assisted suicide. Freja herself participated in the programme and has since reflected on the role she and the TV crew played in Preben’s continued wish to die. Can a law be legally correct but ethically wrong? How does the right to assisted suicide affect people in hopelessness or dependency? And how do we deal with the paradox that we as a society must both prevent suicide and offer assisted suicide?
