Background
The novel Kongens Fald was published in 1901 and celebrates its 125th anniversary in 2026. It follows Mikkel Thøgersen, whose life mirrors the rise and fall of King Christian II, with the Stockholm Bloodbath as its dramatic turning point. The novel is praised for its rich and multifaceted form, moving between poetic passages and pulp-fiction sections, and for its portrayal of the Danish national soul. It was initially met with harsh criticism but is now considered a Danish literary masterpiece.
