About the lecturer

Carsten Sahl Andersen is chairman of Elstrup Mølle’s Friends, which was established to raise funds to buy and restore Elstrup Mølle. In this lecture, he tells about the mill’s history and about the work to preserve and restore the unique cultural-historical landmark.

Background

Elstrup Mølle in Nordals was built in 1888 by miller Chr. Jacobsen. The mill is a Dutch gallery mill and completely unique in a Danish context: it is the only gallery mill in Denmark that is entirely built of wood and still contains an intact collection of milling equipment and machinery. Where many preserved Danish mills have lost their original inventory and history, Elstrup Mølle offers a rare insight into the technological development of milling – from old grindstones to newer machines. Here lie stories about craftsmanship, technology and village life that are otherwise fading away. In 1997, the top of the mill had to be taken down because parts of the supporting structure had collapsed. Now Elstrup Mølle has received a large million-krone grant for the restoration, and with approval from the Danish Agency for Culture and Palaces, the work can finally begin.
