Baggrund
Anne-Marie Vedsø Olesen has always been fascinated by mythologies. In Gudestorm-trilogien she wrote about an Egyptian god who is resurrected in the present and goes berserk, and in the acclaimed novel series Vølvens vej she unfolds a magnificent five-volume epic with women at its centre. The series is inspired by Den poetiske Edda, an Old Norse collection of poems with stories of Norse mythology and heroic sagas – particularly the poem “Vølvens spådom” about the creation, destruction and rebirth of the world, which also inspired writers such as J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis. Women were overlooked when Den poetiske Edda was written down in the 13th century. Anne-Marie Vedsø Olesen corrects this in Vølvens vej, where they are the main characters. A vølve is a seer whom even the gods consult. In Vølvens vej we follow Snehilde, who besides being a fortune-teller is also a strong and resourceful heroine who takes her fate into her own hands. Anne-Marie Vedsø Olesen is a trained physician, but made her debut in 2000 with Salernos sol and has since written a long line of novels spanning from science fiction to historical and mythological tales. She broke through with Vølvens vej and won the DR Romanprisen for the first volume in 2022.
